One Book One Marin

The Amazing Adventures of Kavalier & Clay

The Marin County Free Library, along with City Public Libraries of Marin County and Community Partners Book Passage and Dominican University of California, is pleased to announce the 2010 One

Book One Marin reading program with the selection of Michael Chabon's Pulitzer Prize-winning novel, The Amazing Adventures of Kavalier & Clay.

The purpose of One Book One Marin 2010 is to provide readers with a shared reading experience that leads to open dialogue.  Like nationwide "book clubs", One Book programs are bringing communities together for stimulating discussions about a single book to challenge stereotypes and generate ideas.  A variety of community partners collaborate to bring the community interesting programming and events related to the book throughout the year.

More information, including events, is available on the One Book One Marin website.

The Supergirls: A Slide Show Presentation by Author Mike Madrid

The Supergirls: fashion, feminism, fantasy, and the history of comic book heroinesThe recently published book, The Supergirls: Fashion, Feminism, Fantasy, and the History of Comic Book Heroines by Mike Madrid, is a cultural history of female superheroes in American comic books.  This one-hour presentation traces the evolution of these fantasy characters from the 1920s to the present day, and discusses how their roles, and personas often reflected the lives of American women in the "real world."  Touching on issues such as male/female relationships, empowerment, and heroines' costumes, Mr. Madrid combines history with a touch of humor.  This program will appeal to all audiences with an   interest in comic books and cultural history.
