The Marin County Free Library offers many kinds of digital content to our patrons. Many of these items can be accessed from home by our patrons. Below is an alphabetical listing of the services we offer. Other areas of this section, listed above, break down our holdings by category and access requirements.


Types of digital content we offer include digital books, digital audio books, and  magazine articles. We also subscribe to services that provide online tutoring, and readers advisory. Our goal is to provide a wide range of information that extends what can otherwise be found online, such as copyrighted full text articles. We hope that these services are of value to students, individuals conducting research, readers, and other users representing the wide range of our patronage.

 



Digital Content A-Z

Ancestry Library Edition

Available only at the Civic Center Branch, this database provides genealogical information including U.S. Census records.

Who can access remotely? No remote access is allowed.

Receive assistance from a librarian at participating libraries in California and elsewhere in the United States. This reference chat service is available 24 hours a day 7 days a week. (It cannot answer question related to MCFL policy or operations, however.)

Biography Resource Center

Contains thousands of award-winning biographies and also includes full-text articles from hundreds of periodicals. Search for people based on name or more facts such as birth and death year, birth and death place, nationality, ethnicity, occupation, or gender.

Who can access remotely? Cardholders who reside within the Marin County Free Library's jurisdiction.

Bookletters

Offers our patrons up-to-date information on books from publishers and allows users to view, or subscribe to, over 20 eletronic newsletters. Patons wishing to receive regular updates can subscribe using email or RSS.

California Libraries Catalog

When a MARINet library, or aSuperSearch library does not own an item you want, the California Libraries Catalog is another place to search. The catalog contains items at libraries across California and the United States (by selecting the WorldCat option). To request a book from another library, please inquire at your local branch's Reference Desk.

A scholarly business database, including a collection of full text, peer-reviewed, business related journals. Provides indexing and abstracts for important scholarly business journals.

Designed to support patients' information needs and foster an overall understanding of health-related topics. Covers all areas of health and wellness from mainstream medicine to alternative, holistic and integrated medicine.

Students can access live tutors 1:00pm - 10:00pm everyday. This service is available to any user whose library card is affiliated with a branch of the Marin County Free Library.

Available only at the Civic Center Branch, this database provides genealogical information and access to historical records and publications.

Literature Resource Center

Offers biographies, bibliographies, and critical analyses of more than 120,000 authors from every age and literary discipline. Also includes 15-20 page essays on more than 1,600 authors and literary genres and 600 full-text literary criticism titles.

MARINet Catalog

The is first stop for MCFL patrons searching for books and other materials. This catalog includes all of the MCFL holdings, as well as the holdings of all other public libraries in Marin County.

MyiLibrary

A new collection of downloadable audiobooks in the MP3 format. This collection is small but growing.

NetLibrary

Full text electronic books-- including consumer law books with forms. Some may be read online, others may be downloaded. To avoid getting "timed-out" please use our direct NetLibrary link, rather than our catalog to view/download these books.

A searchable database of more than 14 million U.S. businesses and 210 million U.S. residents. In-Library Use: 25 Prints/Downloads per search. Remote Use: 5 Prints/Downloads per search.

Safari Tech Books Online

Thousands of high demand eBooks on technology topics, including titles published by O'Reilly Press, Sun Press, Microsoft Press, Prentice Hall, Adobe Press, and more.

Super Search Information Portal

Search for materials owned by other member libraries of the North Bay Cooperative Library System (NBCLS), including Northern California libraries on the Peninsula and in Lake, Mendocino, Napa, Solano, and Sonoma Counties. When a MARINet library does not own an item, MARINet cardholders may borrow a copy from a participating NBC library.

Virtual Reference Library

Gale Virtual Reference Library is a collection of encyclopedias and specialized reference sources for research. Includes the Gale Encyclopedia of Science (2004) and West's Encyclopedia of American Law (2005)

Worldbook

The online, multimedia version of the World Book Encyclopedia. Includes encyclopedia articles, web links, periodical articles, videos, animations, sounds, interactive maps, and more.

Search for all types of items in thousands of libraries across the United States through one easy-to-use interface. This database will even inform you as to whether MCFL owns the item. If not, you may request it from another library system, at your local branch's Reference Desk.
